In Memory of Belle

To some people, Belle appeared to be just an ordinary little dog. An 8-pound Chihuahua mix, who was somewhat indulged by her human parents. To those of us who understand the bond that exists between humans and animals the truth is evident: Belle was an enlightened bodhisattva in a small, furry body! Although small in stature, Belle was a giant in personality. Whether playing in the flower garden, or working with clients in my office, we were constantly together. She slept on our pillows at night and woke us each morning.

One of my favorite memories of Belle is visiting Virginia Beach. She flew first class in the cabin with us and was the delight of the flight attendants on the one-hour flight. Belle loved to run on the beach and chase the sea gulls. Her bold personality made it easy for her to meet people.

My husband and I adopted Belle through Cause for Paws Rescue on January 13, 2002. At the time, she was a frail, frightened little girl who had been rescued by this wonderful organization. With time, tenderness, good nutrition, and veterinary medicine Belle soon became strong and confident. She was the ultimate Alpha-Ruler of our hearts.

In 2003, Belle was diagnosed with heart disease; her Vet estimated Belle to be between 15 and 17 years of age. With the help of regular check ups and medications, she continued to live a full and active life. In the early morning hours of February 1st, with her family holding her and saying goodbye, Belle passed quietly in her sleep. Belle was a blessing, a dearly loved family member, and a great and wonderful teacher. Her human parents, Kevin and Mary as well as her dog family and friends; Rocky, Connie, Miss Taffy, Susie, and Phoebe will remember her. Our sense of loss over her passing is immeasurable; yet immeasurable too, is the joy she gave us.

Hi, folks

I thought you might like to hear from an old friend and see a few pictures of how cute I've become. You helped me find my humans last November, when I was named Bitsy. My new name is Ginger, because of my spicy personality ....and after a certain incident of being caught biting my way into a box of gingerbread soon after meeting my humans.

We live in a nice house with a long hallway that's perfect for galloping down, and for chasing the dog Zelda. I run full speed towards Zelda and then do a flying leap up into her face (I'm making a movie: Crouching Ginger, Hidden Tiger - wuahaha). I win almost every battle against Zelda. I win against moths, too. I am the house Captain of the First Reponse Moth Squaq. The only prey that has eluded me is this awful, mysterious red dot that sometimes appears on the floor. Its speed rivals even my own lightning quickness, yet even when I think I've finally captured the beast, it disappears -- only to appear another day! No matter, though. It will be mine soon. I will send a video of one of my more intense battles with the dot, though as a seperate attachment because it is a rather large file. I am considerate like that.

So my life is going great, pretty much. I just wanted to send a note hello to say hi and to thank you for taking such good care of me before I found my home. Best wishes, Ginger

The puppy (we call him Hobie, Originaly Hobo because he was found) is about 40 pounds, we estimate he is about 5 or 6 months old. He appears to have some Lab and not sure what else. His tail curls and his ears do all kinds of crazy things. He is great with my three year old son. He chases the cats a bit but is quite gentle when he catches them. He gets along well with our dog, too. He is fully house broken in the house and car. He absolutly loves to ride in the car and take long walks beside the lake, loves lots of exercize. He knows quite a few commands (sit, laydown, come, speak) If you scold him at all, he comes and sits on your feet like he is saying he's sorry. P.S. We found hobie a posh 10 acre farm setup with unlimited digs to stretch out in. Best part... 4 blocks away... thanks, Erica and John + Riley+ Maxwell

Here are some pictures of Daphne in her new home with her brother Tommy and her sister Katya. She is definitely living the good life. Are those 3 adorable or what?

O'Malley's new family was thrilled and so was he.

Just wanted to send you some new photos of Maddie (now known as Sydney). As you can see, she is fitting in wonderfully. Sleeps through the night, stays out of the crate during the day while we're at work with no accidents, and is just the perfect playmate for Willie & the kids. Thanks again for trusting us with her. Hope all is well. Kevin

Penni is doing GREAT! We still call her Penelope but we've shorten it to Penni. She loves playing with Atti. Atti was not very active before (besides our walks). She plays with Penni all the time.

We got alot of snow the past couple days. She sure loves to run and dig her nose into it. I didn't realize that it was going to snow. Kind of hit all of the sudden overnight. Needless to say...I didn't get their toys picked up. I think that Penni is part blood hound.. hahaha. She digs her nose in under the snow and roots around. She's only found 2 toys so far but alas the snow is melting. She sure doesn't like to wear a coat. I put coats on both Penni & Atti but Penni doesn't like it. Atti doesn't mind it one bit until Penni starts tugging at her coat.

She likes our cats. She does try to chase them & get them to play with her...which they don't. They just hiss and bat at her. She loves watching our bird, Koko, when he starts hollering and throwing peanuts, corn and seeds out of his cage. She loves it because she hurry's over and eats it before I can get it picked up.

Penni sure is cuddly. She loves to sit on my lap and bury her nose. Atti gets jealous and then she has to jump up in my recliner too. Doesn't make for a too comfortable seating. My family loves her. My Mom and sister came up with the 2 babies. Jack is 1 and he was afraid of her but Cami (2) loved her. She followed Penni around everywhere she went....even outside. Jack got used to her and wasn't scared.

I just wanted to let you know that she is doing great. We are so happy to have her living with us. It's like she's always been a part of our family. She fits right in!!!! Cinda

In August of 2001, I was ready to make the commitment of adopting a puppy. My husband was not too sure, and stated that he would live with the puppy but he would not go out of his way to show the puppy any extra attention. Boy, that went out the window fast. Soon I was questioning who was the favorite parent in our relationship as Kira seemed to prefer him on a regular basis. However, it was soon apparent that she loved us equally and was a very intelligent puppy to boot.

After coming from a two-dog family, I soon found that our family was missing something else. After traveling to the PetsMart in Dublin, I found a cute little Vizsla-beagle mix puppy named Barney. The first meeting was an interesting one because neither of them seemed to have stopped running. A few days later, Barney was the official adopted brother of Kira.

>Life may never be the same in my house, but now my husband is an official dog lover. I have two dogs that take over my bed at night, complete with Kira and Barney using passive resistance tactics to avoid going to their real bed at night. But, hey! The Twins seem to enjoy life a lot better now with each other, and it is never a dull moment. And yes, Barney does wear a purple collar. :-) (Both dogs came from Cause For Paws!) Amy.

Belle, before

Belle and Kevin and the New Tractor

Belle had been living in an outdoor pen with 30+ dogs. After seeing Belle's picture and story on the Petfinder's web site, we contacted Cause for Paws. We met Belle the following Saturday at Adoption Day. Kevin held Belle in his arms while we walked around the store visiting with members of Cause for Paws. We learned she had come through a lot of hard times and would need much support for continued healing. Belle's foster guardian, Kristen, brought her for a home visit the next day. It was clear to us that she had come home.

Rocky, Belle and Connie Sit for Their Treats

Belle has since had complete geriatric screening, including testing for glaucoma and additional dental work. She appears to be approximately 10-12 years old. Her vision is diminished and she has only six teeth, but that does not stop her. She has gained weight and chutzpah! We marvel at her continued healing. Rocky and Connie have accepted Belle completely. It has been six weeks and it sometimes seems like they have all been together for years. Belle appears to be the leader. She protects her territory. Belle will take Rocky's toys and hide them, one by one in her area. She will have a pile of soft toys and defend this booty (in a playful way.) Rocky will take something back and they chase through the house like a herd of elephants! Belle's littlest friend is Miss Taffy, also a rescue, Taffy is a bit shy of the "big" dogs yet Belle is very gentle with her. Each night Belle snuggles into the down comforter with us . Every morning she wakes us with kisses.

Ms. Taffy Gives Belle a Kiss

The Belle we know today is far different from the frightened and sad little soul who left McArthur. She is a miracle in large part because of those in rescue who have made her new life possible. We are grateful to Cause for Paws for bringing Belle into this family. Belle's loving spirit is an inspiration We think that Belle brings out the very best in everyone of us! We live with 4 dogs and 2 horses, all adopted-rescued, all needing the extra hug. We are very fortunate, our animal companions give us unconditional love and teach us daily lessons of compassion and how to go the extra mile. The Snyder Family.

Maizey

All is well here. Maizey is doing wonderful! She is such a laid back dog. She is just now starting to play with our cats, and she had a wonderful time with the two dogs at the studio! Jack

Irish

Cause for Paws, We wanted to thank you for finding our most recent addition to our family. I am speaking of Irish of course. Irish, (previously known as Comet) is a four and a half month old golden retriever that was recently rescued from a kill shelter by Cause for paws. It is really hard for me to understand how a person can just write off a dog like him, or any of them for that matter. Fortunately organizations such as yourself are there to rectify some stupidity and bring animals such as Irish into good homes. Thanks again, Matt, Christine, Abby (61/2 year old beagle), and of course Irish

Heather

I have an old dog, her name is Heather and she spent her entire 12 years living in a shelter with her brother. Sadly her brother died there, but little Heather is now safe and happy here. She is all puppy though and you would never know she was 12 except for her lovely silver color. She became housebroken very quickly and has decided that the couch is hers - she gets very upset if you choose to take a nap on it. I have attached her picture so you can see how happy she is. Shawwna. I would take these older souls any day over a pup - they are wise and wonderful.

Dusty Rose

The shots attached were taken her first two weeks here (I got her on 12/21) and she looks even better now. I love her to death - however, I didn't know she would be quite the 'special needs' she is - however, she is worth it. Her hair is all back in her face now and if you didn't see the rest of her body - you would say WOW as she has such a beautiful, sweet face; there is no black on her face at all, her eyelashes, etc., are all back and white. As you know, she was in pretty rough shape so it is slow going. Emotionally, she has come far very quickly I am happy to say. Thinks nothing of getting on the bed, couch and taking off if I don't watch her. However, she thinks its a game. She is up to 91 lbs now. When Cindy had her examined the day before she came, a tumor was found on her head. She also has one on her leg. However, they appear to be benign and we are watching them. She goes to the vet almost every week for scrapings, check up, meds etc. I want to get her healthy enough so we can put her under anesthesia to spay her, examine the tumor and she has some pretty bad gingivitis in her mouth. We'll get there ... she is just what I wanted as far as companion dog though. I've had Newfs before. Her temperament is wonderful and she loves to be with me and I'm happy to spoil her. I'll be glad when winter is over so she can stay outside longer as she likes to be outdoors but with her lack of hair and the cold - I don't like her out more then half an hour at a time. Most of the time, she knows its time to come in. Well, that's it for now. Feel free to stay in touch. I wish I could save more pets. We have a Boston and 3 cats who are also Rescues - it is the ONLY way to go in my opinion! Laurie

Honey

Honey is doing fine. She had her first sleep-over last week. I had to go to Columbus for two days on business so my parents came over here so that they could take my daughter to school. Needless to say, Honey came along. I guess she just took over my house like she owned it. My folks say that she has already taken on the title of "Queen of the House". Her attitude is finally showing. She has only barked once and that was when my mom was playing with her (my mom said that Honey scared herself when she barked). Other than that, she just eats, goes outside to do her business and then climbs up on the couch to go to sleep. Whenever my dad suggests a walk and gets the leash out, she just looks at him like he is crazy, but he has managed to get her to go a couple of times. She didn't seem to impressed, so she made a beeline for the door when they got back home. She is adorable and my parents (and my daughter) just love her to death! Thanks for all of your help in getting us together! Susan

Gattina di Zucchera

WHAT A SWEET HEART!! I've named her Gattina di Zucchera... Zucchi (pronounced ZOO-ky) for short. It means "sugar kitten" in Italian. The name DEFINETLY suits her! She such a lovey kitty! When I got to the shelter, I was worried I wouldn't be able to choose one, they were all so cute! But when I saw little Zucchi in her cage, and bent down to pet her, and she started purring, and headbutting, I was sold! I'm making an appointment today for her to get checked out by my vet, and to get spayed. I feel so bad for her right now... she's in heat big time! She just rolls and rolls, and meows and sticks her little fanny in the air. But its sooooo cute! I'll keep you updated on how she adjusts, and send pictures of her too, if you'd like! Thank you soooooo much for the info you gave me!!! Hugs, Kate

Baron

Baron was rescued from the pound in late summer just minutes before he was to be euthanized. He was starved, abused, frightened and sad. We adopted him from Cause for Paws in October, and he has become a great addition to the family. He is sweet and devoted and really wants to please. He loves to go on walks and play outside with our other dog Wolfey, then relax on "their" couch (Baron is the one on the left). Thanks for a great dog! Sarah and Eric

Dusty

Bebe

Sugar, now Molly

We want you to know Sugar is now Molly and is doing fine. Lucy has accepted her and they are getting along very well. We are very happy to have two wonderful dogs. Thank you and cause for paws for your help and good works. Pat and Margaret.

Alfie and Suzy Q

We adopted Suzy Q and Alfie from Cause for Paws in October. It really started out with just fostering the two cuties but I fell in love with each of their personalities. The two get along so well together and I could never think about giving them up. I am looking forward to what the future has in store for our little family, and I would strongly recommend to anyone who is considering adopting to look into what rescue groups and shelters have to offer. Remember you can save a life. Thanks, Cause for Paws!!! P.S. Here's how we spent our first Halloween!!!

Oreo

I'm Oreo! Look at me now!! I have a loving forever family!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Cause for Paws!!!!!!!!!!

Missy (Sarah)

For those of you who don't know who Missy (aka Sarah) is, she was a dog I rescued from Zanesville. She was so thin you could literally see everyone bone in her body, she was covered with fleas and had sores all over. I think she also has a beebee in her side. She was also scared of her own shadow and would never had been found out in the open like in the pictures. Then Sarah found her forever home, and became Missy!

This is how Missy spent Thanksgiving day. She is doing great and she and my mom have really bonded. They are together constantly. Missy got spayed yesterday and did fine, my mom got teary when we dropped her off at the vets, they were really glad to see each other this morning. Thanks for finding her for us; she has been a real comfort and a great companion for Mom. Darlene.

Rigby

I just wanted to thank the Cause for Paws rescue, and to also let everyone that views this page know how wonderful they are. My husband, Steve, our dog, Daphne, and I adopted a black Lab, Rigby from the rescue, and it was a great experience. They are all very caring people who will do absolutely anything for the dogs, and we really appreciate them. Rigby was in the pound, where he was wasting away until the rescue saved him from his death an hour before he was supposed to go. Now, he's playing and romping with our yellow lab, Daphne, during the day and snoring in the bed with us at night! I'm trying to fatten him up with dog cookies so all of his ribs and spine won't be visible anymore. :)

If anyone is thinking about getting a dog, you should seriously consider adopting from Cause for Paws--they are special people. :) Katie
